The Big Bang theory is a theory that attempts  to explain what happened at the very beginning of our universe. Scientists believe that before the 'Big Bang' there was nothing. The big bang theory is an effort to explain what happened during and after that moment. According to the theory, our universe exploded into existence from something scientists believe was "singularity". No one really knows what is a "singularity" and where it comes though this is the reasoning behind them.   Singularities are zones which defy our current understanding of physics and thought to exist at the core of 'black holes.' These black holes are areas of intense gravitational pressure so intense that finite matter is actually squished into infinite density called "singularities". The big bang theory is based on the idea of our universe being extremely small and infinitely hot - a singularity. It apparently inflated (big bang) , expanded and cooled.
Scientists think that at the beginning of the universe a "singularity" particle exploded in a split second, sending out millions of sub-atomic particles into space. After billions of years these particles started clumping together. They formed different elements which created the universe.  There is no proof of this singularity but there is proof of an explosion or massive expansion starting from something. The universe continues to expand with us existing inside it along with several hundred billion other stars.
The evidence to support the Big Bang Theory
In 1842 Christian Doppler proposed a theory called the 'Doppler effect.' The Doppler effect occurs when a car is driving towards you and you hear a high pitch noise emitted from the vehicle but when it passes, the noise changes into a lower pitch sound. These different pitch sounds are caused by different wavelengths. As the car comes towards you the waves are compressed and are tightly packed which will produce the high pitch sound. As it passes you the waves become longer and wider causing the low pitch noise. This can also be measured on a scale from light waves.
Cosmic background radiation is thermal radiation filling the observable universe. As the car is coming towards you the waves are blue and as it drives away the waves are red. The microwaves caused by 'Cosmic Background Radiation' are red which means that the universe is travelling outwards so it is expanding. That is why most scientists believe that the Big Bang theory is the more likelier option. An expansion as outlined in the Big Bang theory, could have caused everything to move outwards and as there is nothing to slow down this expansion, it may continue forever causing the universe to be ever expanding.
